Very little is known about the malt from the Union distillery in Veranopolis. It isn’t even 100% certain that Barrilete, their ‘whisky malte puro’ really is a single malt. Several e-mails to the company owning the distillery, asking for clarification of the situation and for details on production methods, all achieved the same result: no reply in any shape or form.
But let’s assume for now that Barrilete really is a Brazilian single malt (and let’s not pay too much attention to the fact that it is bottled at 39.1%, which technically prevents it being a ‘whisky’). What is it like? The nose is sweet- spirity, with a touch of malt. It’s very light and thin, with a slightly oily body and something clearly soapy in the palate. Interesting as a curiosity, but not a dram to savour …..
